Since September, I’ve been living in a self-catering halls.
So, for the first time ever, I’m feeding myself and housekeeping for myself (and a little bit for BP, too).
And it’s tricky to work out for the first time. There’s no manual to tell me how to keep house, and even if there was, I probably couldn’t afford it.
So here I am, stumbling along, learning mostly from my mistakes.
Last year, I was in a catered, cleaned, etc, halls, and lunch was the only food I had to worry about.
So long as I turned up within the time frame, I was treated to a choice of hot meals, with a choice of desserts. Among these desserts was (6 of 7 days) a hot pudding and custard.
I’m an English-raised girl. That doesn’t necessarily mean I completely need Sunday roast lunches, puddings with custards and all the rest.
But I’ve a very sweet tooth, especially for cake. It’s filling and sweet and comforting and keeps, and turns into something great with just a little custard.
A good pudding makes my whole day great again, it makes the whole world right for me.
And a really great pudding makes me happy enough that if I died on the spot, I’d still be a happy girl.
So, why on earth am I missing puddings?
It’s not health reasons - I’m underweight, so should be eating more calories. (Estimated 500 more a day than the RDA)
It’s not budget reasons - I’m convinced I have enough spare in the budget to provide desserts all week (BP doesn’t eat them at all, for starters).
It’s simply poor housekeeping.
When planning a weekly menu, dessert always gets missed off - I run out of time, effort or paper space. Or I assume I can find one on offer or find inspiration at the supermarket
When I’m shopping, I always forget anything that’s not on my list, or cross off ‘dessert’ because I’m in a hurry or everything I found was too expensive.
I have made desserts work for me somewhat, in the small percent of time I’ve made cake on Sunday for the week ahead.
One of my best recipes is my Redcake, although that’s off the menu right now as the recipe calls for fresh summer berries (out of season, and hence expensive) and three eggs per 6 servings (also expensive - I limit myself to no more than a half dozen per week). Also, it’s one of the only cakes and desserts I make that BP adores - so it gets eaten at twice the speed!
The other thing is, with all my desserts for the week from the one cake, I feel bored with it by the end of the week.
What I need is things I can prepare in advance. I’m quite happy to spend my whole Sunday afternoon preparing things.
I use my freezer a lot, too, so I’d love batches of things I can freeze to have some when I fancy.
Redcake unfortunately won’t freeze, but I’m more than happy to eat that for the three times I get at it, lol!
